Sources and Licenses

Everything you hear and read in the checker comes from open sources. This page lists them with their licenses, so you know where the words and sentences come from.

1. CC-CEDICT

What we use it for: meanings and pinyin readings of the words in the tone pairs chart, the words with xu practice, and the sentence reading practice.

2. wordfreq

What we use it for: the order of words in the words with xu practice, from the most frequent down.

3. Tatoeba

What we use it for: the Chinese sentences in the sentence reading practice, with their English and Russian translations.

Each sentence keeps the name of its Tatoeba contributor inside our data file.

4. HSK 3.0 word list

What we use it for: the HSK level shown next to words in the tone pairs chart and the words with xu practice.

5. Fonts

What we use them for: all text inside the pronunciation checker.

6. Our own tables

The word and sentence tables we build from the sources above are shared under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 license where the source requires it. The same applies to the readings table inside the Chinese Pronunciation Chrome extension, built from CC-CEDICT and wordfreq.
The pronunciation checker, the tone trainer, and the site code are our own work.

7. Speech scoring

Your pronunciation is scored by SpeechSuper, a speech recognition service. We do not keep recordings. How your voice is handled is described in our Privacy Policy.

8. Found a mistake?

If you spot a wrong reading or a missing credit, write to us through the Contact page.
